The Legalise Cannabis WA (LCWA) Party calls for an immediate reopening of the WA firearms buyback scheme and a comprehensive parliamentary review of the new firearms act.

LCWA supports modernising firearm laws to enhance public safety.

However, the rushed implementation of the rewritten Firearms Act and its accompanying regulations are deeply flawed. The government failed to adequately consult recreational shooters and has blindsided them with drastic changes, including significantly increased storage requirements and the sudden banning of previously legal firearms.

In 2024, $64.3 million was allocated for a voluntary firearms buyback, but much of that funding remains unspent. With the recent release of the regulations, affected shooters finally have the full picture of how these changes impact them. It is essential that the remaining funds - already allocated by the government - be used to reopen the buyback immediately, providing shooters a fair opportunity to comply with these new laws.

In addition, LCWA joins the chorus of voices calling for an immediate and detailed parliamentary review into the new legislation and it's associated regulations. Existing parliamentary review processes were sidestepped, and consequently the legislation and regulations have already been amended several times in the short few months since the laws were pushed through.
